The data breach came to light after the company hired consultants to “investigate unauthorized activity on an internal security system, prompted by a specific incident in which the unauthorized access was cut off a week after it was identified,” McDonald’s said.

Disclosed Information

As per the report, the cyber incident has affected the food chain’s markets including the U.S., South Korea, and Taiwan. It further added that the breach disclosed some contact information about U.S. employees and franchisees. Moreover, the incident also exposed some information about restaurants such as seating capacity.

However, the fast-food mega-chain McDonald’s said no customer data was breached in the U.S. Also, the exposed data of employees was not sensitive or personal.

But the bad news is some information that has been stolen includes customer emails, phone numbers, and addresses for delivery customers in South Korea and Taiwan. Moreover, employee information including names and contact information in Taiwan.

Nonetheless, the company has assured that the breach didn’t impact any customer payment information. Moreover, the breach hasn’t affected any business operations at its restaurants. Also, it wasn’t a ransomware attack, so no ransom was demanded by the hackers of the company nor did the company pay any ransom.

Moving Forward

Over the recent years, McDonald’s had heavily invested in cyber security defenses and this proved to be fertile ground for the company to respond to the recent cyber attack. The company said, “it cut off hackers’ access to data soon after the breach was identified.”

Moreover, the company has advised the employees and franchisees to be aware of the phishing attacks and also be careful if asked for any information.
